A few shots of our 2010 trip to :Lake O'Hara
This year we had decided on a trip
up to the top of Opabin
Col.....basically that little bump in
the middle of the pass in the
distance. 41 years ago I had
previously climbed that Col with my
climbing partner Roger Patillo but
had not been back since. It seemed
more than appropriate to repeat
the journey now as Roger had just
recently passed away only days
before our trip. It now became an
opportunity to re-kindle some great
memories of a great man, and an
equally great friend.
This ones for you Roger.
With Victoria and I on this trip were
Cliff and Karen Butchko, Richard
Unger and his son, Aaron.
Let's go Karen..just a few crevasses..and they're small!
A smoky view from the top from all the forest fires
Ptarmigan......nice shot Vic!
A welcome lunch at the top and a filtered view.
Cocktails at the point
after a great day of
hiking......
And, usually these
guys suddenly appear
looking for a handout.
We're finally back off the glacier on to stable rocks
The old exposed hardened ice is rock studded, slippery and
difficult to catch a good grip unless your crampons are sharp
and well fastened. Richard and Aaron had some trouble with
theirs and it was quite unnerving for both of them.
This shot (by Cliff Butchko), is from All Soul's
Lookout and shows the rubble covered glacier.
Almost at the top.....unfortunately the troublesome
crampons kept Richard and Aaron just short of the top.
Cliff took this picture from just above the ridge.
Victoria's red Lily's beside the stream on the East Opabin Trail.
The trail to Schaffer Lake
and Lake MacArthur.
Cliff and his reward....a cold
beer!
More trails, this
one to Grand
Odaray where we
met Bruce Millar
and his son Ethan,
who had both just
climbed Mt. Odaray.
Cliff and Karen on top of Odaray Grand View
Smoky fire haze spoiled the usually spectacular sunset.
